Welcome back to our work experience and internships testimonies blog! If you missed part one, you can find it here. It’s also a good place to start if you would like to find out more about the work experience options we offer. The translation industry can be difficult to get into – and that’s even if you know exactly what career you want. We offer internships for students and graduates and work experience placements for school students to help them get some experience in the industry, or simply give them more information about working in the industry.
Read on to find out what some of our interns and work experience students have to say about their time with us.
Max, translation intern 2017:
“As a student of Modern Languages, I studied German, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese at the University of Birmingham. I will now be moving on to do my MA in Translation at the University of Bath. I plan to work as in-house translator for a while before moving onto freelancing, ideally using all three of my foreign languages.
As a translation intern at AST Language Services, I was made to feel very welcome from day one as all the staff there were very friendly to me. This internship well exceeded my expectations in terms of how useful it was and how involved I was. Despite only having spent a month at AST, I really felt like a part of the team, seeing real translation jobs through from start to finish.
I was taught how to use CAT tools and I have learned a lot about translation itself, namely its elephant traps and general things to look out for when rendering an English translation. The feedback I received from Anna and the other translators was invaluable.Although short, my time at AST has given me some insight into the translation industry and a clearer idea of where I would like to take my career as a translator.”
Megan, work experience student 2017:
“‘Protecting your reputation worldwide’ is a perfectly fitting slogan for a company like AST Language Services given its success driven by the multi-talented workforce. AST Language Services has gone above and beyond my expectations to expose me to every aspect of a translation company, from working with in-house translators to improving my own translation skills to working in project management, which meant I could experience things from a more commercial vantage point of the service. Overall, an enormous feat for a work experience placement of just one week. For such a culturally diverse yet harmonised company to welcome me so warmly into a wonderful environment has truly left me feeling inspired and motivated to reach and uphold the immense standards which AST Language Services sets for the world of translation.”
